Chaldean vs Pythagorean: why one name gives two numbers

Not a disagreement about meaning — a disagreement about arithmetic.

The one difference that causes all the others

Chaldean

Values run 1 to 8. No letter is ever worth 9. The order is not alphabetical — it comes from an older assignment of sounds to numbers.

Pythagorean

Values run 1 to 9, assigned straight down the alphabet: A=1, B=2 … I=9, then J starts again at 1.

Which one should you go by?

In India, usually Chaldean

It is the system most Indian practitioners use, and it is what this site defaults to. Cheiro, whose books carried it into wide use, is still cited by name.

But know which one produced your number

Most calculators show one number and do not say which table they used. If you compare two sites and get two answers, this is almost always why — the second most common reason being whether Pvt Ltd was counted.

We will not pick for you

There is no measurement that makes one table correct and the other wrong. They are two conventions. Showing one and hiding the other would be tidier and less honest.
